The sound the Mosquito generates is very directional so it is important that the area to be covered is correctly identified so that the unit is effective. The front plate (baffle) projects the sound down by approximately 30° when mounted horizontally. Care must be taken when adjusting the mounting bracket to ensure the device is angled correctly. Please note the sound is not going were the device is pointing due to the baffle as illustrated below where the unit is mounted flat to the wall at a height of 3m.

The range of the Mosquito depends on the level of background noise but typically the unit needs to be installed within 10m of the problem area. Once the Teenagers become aware of the noise they will usually not want to stand within 20m of the Mosquito.
The closer they are to the unity the quicker the effect.
The angle the sound is projected at is detailed in the drawing below. Again it is important to ensure the unit is pointed correctly for maximum efficiency. The Mosquito has a spread of approximately 60°.
Setting up the Mosquito prior to installation
Internally to the unit there is a small block of four dip switches and it is important that they are set correctly prior to installation. The switches are marked 1 through to 4:-
SW1 Internal Timer – With this switch in the closed position the unit will operate for 20 minutes when power is applied or when the EXT TRG inputs are shorted. Once the unit has sounded for 20 minutes it will silence and can not be retriggered for a further 20 minutes. When SW1 is in the open position the unit will sound for as long as power is supplied. SW1 should only be used in the open position when used on private property and when the possibility of causing local nuisance is properly evaluated. It is recommended when the unit is set to run continuously when an external time switch is used.
SW2 EXT TRG – External Trigger. In the closed position when the EXT TRG terminals (0v)/TRG are shorted the unit will sound. Note: SW1 should be closed.
SW3 SOUND TRG – In the closed position with SW1 also in the closed position the unit will automatically sound for 20 minutes when a noise of greater than 65dB is received. This is designed to be used when the unit is installed internally. Use of this feature when installed externally may result in random triggering.
SW4 VOL(OUTDOOR/INDOOR) – In the closed position the unit will operate at its maximum volume for external use. In the open position the unit is set for internal use at a reduced volume.
NOTE: When any switch is in the open position the switch will be ‘flat’ towards the OPEN engraving on the switch block.
Switch positions examples
Mosquito used on private property or with an external time switch:-
SW1 OPEN, SW2 OPEN, SW3 OPEN, SW4 CLOSED (External Use)
Mosquito used with an external bell push or passive infra-red detector:-
SW1 CLOSED, SW2 CLOSED, SW3 OPEN, SW4 CLOSED (External Use)
Mosquito running automatically in a stairwell or communal area (Internally)
SW1 CLOSED, SW2 OPEN, SW3 CLOSED, SW4 OPEN
Wiring the MosquitoInternally to the unit is a 6 block terminal strip and should be connected as follows:-
(Reading from left to right/ Writing correct way up)
T1 & T2 – EXT TRG (0v)/TRG – These terminals are used to switch the unit when connected to an external device e.g. PIR or bell push. Shorting these terminals activates the Mosquito. NO EXTERNAL VOLTAGE SHOLUD BE CONNECTED TO T1/T2.
T3 & T4 – 0v/12v OUT – These terminals provide power for externally connected triggering devices such as a PIR. They are rated at 12v dc. It is important to calculate the power requirements of connected equipment to ensure that the connected power supply provides sufficient current to power the Mosquito unit as well as the connected device.
T5 & T6 – 0v/12v IN – These terminals provide the power to run the Mosquito. A suitable PSU (power supply unit) rated at 12v dc regulated and with a current rating of 100ma or more is required. (Typically 200ma rated will be sufficient to power a Mosquito and PIR)
When using a Compound Security supplied PSU the cable marked with the RED sleeve should be connected to the 12v IN terminal and the unmarked wire to the 0v IN.
NOTE: The power cable is the weak point of the system and is prone to attack so it is recommended the cable is suitable protected.
Testing the Installation
The best test procedure is to acquire the assistance of a helpful Teenager were this is not possible a suitable test meter can be purchased from CSS ltd. Stand the said Teen in the correct position and turn the Mosquito on. You should hear the complaints! J
To facilitate installation and to check that the unit is running the Mosquito produces a short beep once every minute that should be heard by all ages.
My Mosquito is not having any effect why?
Check the switch settings and that you can hear the short beep.
The most common reasons for this is that the device does not have range to cover the required area. The solution is either to relocate the unit closer to the target point or use additional units. There may be no problem other than stubborn Teenagers; the Mosquito will win out just be patient it can take several weeks before the most stubborn individuals give up and move on for good.
